Background

Software within the gaming community at this point is purely commercial. However, what is forgotten is the freeware companies that thousands of indie developers have created for free simply out of passion. In addition, there’s more to just games when it comes to freely accessible content from low-budget movies, to podcasts and excellent documentaries. Music is also abundant on the web from great artists who want to get their names out.

FreeCENTRE OS

FreeCENTRE OS is an in-development Linux Distribution that will allow you to access all this freely-available entertainment with a beautiful 10-foot interface. It is designed to work on a wide range of hardware and tuned for performance. The UI will be very usable and intuitive while keeping that artistic touch that makes using our repository so much simpler.

All content will be vetted by a community of passionate developers who will design installers that are transparent and quick happening in the background so you can continue the action of your game. We have taken inspiration from successful content platforms while staying unique, innovative and flexible.

Previous attempts at similar platforms by larger companies have failed due to bad planning, poor performance, small games selection and a disappointing library. We will not be making the mistakes of our forebearers learning instead from their experience. Our platform will remain relevant and modern without encumbering our users with complicated setups.

Prototypes of FreeCENTRE OS UX

The FreeBASE

Although the focus will mostly be on software, we will be developing a hardware device similar to a game console preloaded with FreeCENTER OS that is fine tuned for the best experience. Although the FreeBASE will have a modern design, it will use off-the-shelf parts allowing you to hack the console without voiding your warranty. This hardware project will be made if FreeCENTRE OS sets a new standard when it comes to free content.

Open-Source Strategy

The majority of the FreeCENTER OS will be open-source though will have proprietary components. We believe that users can benefit from this hybrid model. The games and media list will be developed by the online community. Everything will be heavily tested to ensure that it works with the smoothest and most streamlined process. Unlike some of our competitors, we test all the products in our repository.

History

The concept for the FreeBASE was initially designed by a dedicated group of engineers back in 2013. We had a grandiose vision but we had to chase other opportunities unfortunately. However, the passion was always driving us to develop new pieces and providing us with the vision we have today. Our original engineers have returned to work full-time on this software project along with a possible hardware project.

Updates

As the FreeCENTRE OS progresses along with it accompanying software, we will be demoing prototypes including progress reports on my blog. Stay tuned.
